In my case (now I know what pantheism actually *is*) I suppose I was a sort of pantheist as soon as I started pondering belief systems at an early age. Church never appealed to me, yet I still stuck with the idea that there MUST be a God, as so many…

What does "better" mean when applied to the Universe? Better by which criteria? Whose criteria? The Universe is incomprehensibly vast, and that we humans are but mid sized beings --- in terms of powers of 10 somewhere in the middle of the log scale…

My exercise regimen is 3 rescued Husky dogs. They insist on being walked for long walks in any weather, twice a day. I also have a Bow-Flex exercise machine but it unfortunately seldom gets used. I've just made a non-New Years Resolution to start us…

Yeah, I don't get that one either. Can you imagine spending 10s of thousands or 100s of thousands on a vehicle? Give me an old VW bug any day of the week! Actually I wish I had my old bug now.

It seems to be that most people need a deeper sense of meaning to their lives and to life in general than science can offer. For many people, science feels to impersonal, technical, and removed from nature in that nature is analyzed too much and is…

Awesome logical comment from a such a little boy, would have made me proud as well. My little girl is 6 so I'm trying to have the same attitude with her, to balance her love of cartoons and toys and other fun nonsense with reality-based observation…

Since I don't think there is an 'Is' of the Universe with a global consciousness it still seems possible that the Universe may have produced beings that are capable to imagine it better than the Universe itself is capable to do on a global scale. Ev…

The problem is always practical in how do you enforce doomsday driven policies on free people with the caveat the it is "for their own good"? Essentially it is like saying to a child "because I am the mommy, that's why". It doesn't seem to work out…

Yep, totally irresponsible and shows no regard for human life. It's the lack of accountability for one's actions that really burns me. There's so much good we can do in the world - I don't get how some people can just sit passively by and believe th…

I have no problem with Jesus taking the wheel, as long as he leaves the car in "park". Man! I really hate the fact that we have people driving on our roads and operating in sensitive areas with this dangerous and careless attitude.

I agree that there are different versions of prayer and they should be considered in their context. Meditation is great - very healthy. Periods of deep thought and reflection on what we truly value in life and what we want to accomplish are very hea…

I use this verse for support, Matthew 21:22-23 Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' an…

How to avoid Ning overload: Be highly selective.

After three months experience with Ning, it's becoming clearer how we can best feel at home there without feeling confused or overwhelmed by the wealth of options and the quality of experiences, inspirations and thoughts available.

Be selective
Consider our Online Community like a city, with many monuments museums, neighborhoods and cafes. Find the places you like and stop by them. Find a couple of comfy corners to frequent and settle into the sofas there.
Nobody can know everyone… Continue

SERIOUS ISSUE WITH DISCUSSIONS

We have just learned that when someone leaves Ning, any discussions they started are deleted - and so are any replies that any other people have added, including any record even on your own home page.

This has already happened to us once when the Paganism and Pantheism discussion disappeared a few weeks ago.

This has some important implications:

1. Everyone should keep their own copies of wha

Our first spammer!

Well it happened, in our fifth week at Ning. A girl called Esther joined, six hours ago, describing herself as a nice-looking girl. Her photo was a vase of flowers. As soon as she arrived she began leaving comments on male profile pages, asking to be friends, giving her email, saying she would send her picture. She did about ten guys, while she was here, sending the same message to each one. Five or six smelled spam instantly, one mailed me.
We don't really have any protection against this, exce… Continue

New menu entry for local groups!

You can now hover on the groups Tab and see a menu item for local & regional groups!
Since Ning does not have an option to categorize groups, this had to be improvised. You just insert the word "local" somewhere early in the group description. The new link is basically a search page for the word "local" in all the groups.

Keeping up with the discussions here and finding your niche

Sharon is quite right when she says it's easy to start getting overwhelmed by all the activities.
An important way to reduce the noise here is to limit what emails you get sent. You can do that here.
Also you can choose to start or stop getting emails about any particular discussion by clicking "Follow" or "Stop following" at the bottom of the reply box.
It's also wise to find a niche of the most important places for… Continue

Keep an eye out for chat or you'll miss it

Potentially the chat facility here is great - at any time there are six or more members on line, and you can chat at any time. The biggest problem with the way it is now, is knowing that someone is trying to chat. There should be a window that pops up but there isn't. Here's a typical exchange of people trying valiantly to be heard, and failing. I hope they don't mind.
